Margo Guryan is a classically trained pianist, jazz composer, singer-songwriter, producer, teacher and a resonating influence with her 1968 pop gem of an album, Take A Picture. Her songs have been recorded by jazz and pop artists alike (Carmen McCrae, Anita O’Day, Julie London, Harry Belafonte, Astrud Gilberto, [Mama] Cass Elliot, Bobbie Gentry and Glen Campbell, and Jackie DeShannon).
Margo resumed the study of classical piano in the years after the Take A Picture release. With her extensive musical education and experience including working with teachers such as Bill Evans, John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet, Gunther Schuller and later Howard Richman, Margo eventually would became a teacher herself. She initially developed “The Chopsticks Variations” as a piano piece for her young children, reflecting her interest in the many dialects of music rampant in the American culture. It would later grow and evolve into a published book, in print worldwide and distributed by Hal Leonard, becoming a favorite among teachers and students everywhere.
I never thought that anyone could do anything with “Chopsticks”, but Margo Guryan has done it remarkably in a charming set of variations on the famous tune: clever, witty, at times tender and elegant, at other times punning and ribald. Every variation has some delightfully surprising touch. A little American “Mikrokosmas” – and much more fun!
