David Myhr - Summer Summer Summer
This autumn, pop artist David Myhr (formerly of The Merrymakers) will release the summer single ”Summer Summer Summer” arriving on May 29th, produced in collaboration with Andreas Dahlbäck (known for his work with Anna Ternheim and Ulf Lundell).
"One day, the chorus hook 'Summer Summer Summer' suddenly popped into my head," says David. "It was almost embarrassingly easy to catch.”
After David finished the melody, Nashville-based songwriter Bill DeMain contributed the lyrics:
”David’s idea was fantastically hooky, fun, summery, optimistic, and bright. It couldn’t have come at a better time, because he sent it to me about halfway through the pandemic. I saw this song as a kind of ray of hope for what we all hoped would be on the other side of this dark period. Since it was a summer song, I thought a lot about growing up in New Jersey and going to the beach. So, I wrote about sandcastles, ice cream, soda tabs, and those kinds of nostalgic things. The funny thing about nostalgia is that it makes you feel happy and warm, but it can also make you feel a bit melancholy, because you see it through the lens of time passed.”
As production progressed, David realized that Iain Hornal would be the perfect fit for the vocal harmonies. Hornal is the lead singer for the current lineup of the legendary 10cc. When David reached out, Hornal was actually on the road with Jeff Lynne’s ELO during their final UK tour. Between two shows, he recorded his backing vocals in his hotel room.
”I think the reason David asked me to sing on this particular song was that I’m a big Beach Boys fan, and as the title suggests, it’s a very Beach Boys-inspired song," Hornal says. "So, I really tried to create a vocal arrangement in their spirit. It was an honor to be asked. David is a fantastic artist!”
David concludes regarding the song's title: ”In Sweden, you grow up with the radio show 'Sommar, sommar, sommar.' And ABBA gave us 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!' and 'Money, Money, Money.' So, I figured I might as well do ’Summer Summer Summer’."
